But you’d never know

When you, lost in thought
Call me
By her name.
A name that rolls off your tongue
As soon as you’re off guard
As casually
And as normally
As it’s supposed to be.

You call me by her name
And in that moment,
In that split second,
Before you struggle to remember mine;
In that fleeting moment.
I catch an unwelcome
Lucid glimpse
Of a lovesick human
And stale, rotting love.
Of dusty memories
And tears that almost slipped
But couldn’t.

Of how strong a human can be
And yet how miserable;
So miserable.
